Abhay Deol is Indian film actor mainly works in Bollywood cinema . He belongs to well known Deol family of Bollywood . Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol are his cousins . Unlike his cousins who mainly acts in massy commercial movies, Abhay is noted for his portrayal of complex characters on screen, and is vociferous in his support for parallel cinema in India . He has often been labelled as an unconventional actor by Indian media. Abhay owns a production company, Forbidden Films which was established in 2009. In addition to his acting career, he is also an active philanthropist and supports various NGOs . He has appeared on the various magazine covers including the Man’s World and the Time Out Mumbai, with titles such as “The New Face of Indian Cinema”. In 2009, Abhay was included in the list of Zoom’s “50 Most Desirable Hotties”, being placed seventh . Abhay Deol nickname is Dimpy due to his dimples . He started doing theatre and plays during his school days .
Abhay started his career in bollywood with Imtiaz Ali directed movie Socha Na Tha ( 2005 ) which was average at the box office . Ahista Ahista ( 2006 ) was his second movie opposite Soha Ali Khan which was disaster at the box office . In 2007 Abhay acted in three movies Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. , Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and Manorama Six Feet Under . Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd directed by Reema Kagti of Talaash ( 2012 ) fame was his first box office success . Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and Manorama Six Feet Under were critically acclaimed movies but commercial failure at the box-office . Manorama Six Feet Under went onto win several awards and praised universally . Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! ( 2008 ) was his next release which was hit movie and Abhay’s role of Lucky became very popular . Abhay Deol breakthrough role came in 2009 with the role of Dev in Anurag Kashyap’s Dev.D, a modern-day adaptation of the Bengali classic novel Devdas . Following the success of the film, Abhay gained wider recognition and movie became the cult classic of Bollywood . After Dev.D his next films Road, Movie and Aisha both released in 2010 were flop at the box office . Abhay was not happy to be a part of Aisha, according to him the film was more focused on clothes rather than acting . Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara ( 2011 ) was the first big budget film of his career which was directed by Zoya Akhtar . It was multi starrer movie and first blockbuster of Abhay’s career . Shanghai in 2012 with Emraan Hashmi was a classical masterpiece but failed to make a solid impact at the box office . Chakravyuh was his second release of 2012 which was directed by legendary director Prakash Jha was also dull at the box office although it was well-praised and really close to reality . After having dull 2012 with two flops Abhay started 2013 with Raanjhanaa directed by Anand Rai which was a sleeper hit of that year and role of college student leader by Abhay was critically acclaimed and became popular among audience . After Raanjhanaa his movies in subsequent years like One By Two ( 2014 ), Happy Bhag Jayegi ( 2016 ) , Nanu Ki Jaanu ( 2018 ) and Zero ( 2018 ) were all box office failures except Happy Bhag Jayegi ( 2016 ) which was semi-hit . Abhay made his Tamil debut in 2019 with a superhero film Hero . In the same year he acted in Chopsticks which was only released on Netflix .
